Under a cool October night sky, the Brooklyn Panthers looked every bit the team on a mission. With a blend of sharp pitching and a thundering offense, Brooklyn overwhelmed the Buffalo Braves 9–2 on Thursday, moving within one victory of the American Conference Finals.
From the very start, it was all about rhythm and control. Starter Mitch Keller gave the Panthers exactly what they needed, five steady innings of precision and pace, striking out six while allowing only one run. “He set the tone,” said manager Mike Maddux afterward. “When your starter fills up the zone like that, everything else falls into place.”
The Panthers broke through in the second when Marcus Semien’s sharp single turned into a footrace, and a highlight. After the ball skipped past outfielders, Semien never slowed, charging home for an inside-the-park score that set the tone and ignited the crowd.
Veteran catcher Travis d’Arnaud extended the lead in the fourth with a two-run single, making it 3–0 before Buffalo found life in the sixth. The Braves strung together three hits off Keller and reliever Angel Zerpa, trimming the margin to 3–2. But Nick Martinez ended the rally with a strikeout of Julio Rodríguez, slamming the door on Buffalo’s last real threat.
From there, the Panthers roared. In the seventh, Ha-Seong Kim reached base, and Juan Soto followed with a two-run homer that left no doubt.
“We needed that swing,” Soto said. “You could feel the energy come right back.”
Moments later, Gunnar Henderson doubled and scored on a Marcell Ozuna single to make it 6–2. Then, in the eighth, Kim punctuated the night with a towering three-run blast deep into the left-field stands, sealing the 9–2 rout.
Brooklyn finished with 14 hits, Semien (3-for-4), Kim (2-for-4, 3 RBI), and d’Arnaud (2-for-4, 2 RBI) leading the charge.
“We’re locked in,” Kim said quietly in the clubhouse. “But the job’s not done yet.”
The Panthers now hold a commanding 3–1 series lead, with Game 5 set for Friday night in Brooklyn — and a chance to punch their ticket to the Conference Finals. W – Keller (1–0)
